Even in hard times are most of still not much much better off compared to our ancestors and their tough times?

Possibly the difference between relative and absolute poverty - even when I have to watch every 1p I still keep my own woes in perspective - compared to some in third world countries or some within our own country now and historically - for most of us our hardships are not THAT hard - most still eat, have shelter, access to medical help etc etc
